Sacrifice or Compromise

What really is the difference between sacrifice and compromise?  When you compromise isn't is the agreement to sacrifice something?

Sacrifice is defined as making an offering, to give up, to surrender.  Basically you are incurring a loss of something of equal or lesser value.  So technically you gain nothing out of sacrificing. Compromise is defined as to settle, to expose to danger, to consent, to jeopardize.  Seems to me that sacrificing is a better way to get a result than to compromise.  But why is compromise used more positively than sacrifice?  They make it seem like you go through a great amount of suffering when you sacrifice as opposed to compromising.  All you are doing when sacrificing is offering to give up as opposed to jeopardizing your settlement in compromising.
